When our son Jake was two years old, he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. He was happy and healthy for the next seven years. He then began to struggle with his blood sugar levels and his health began to fail. A great endocrinologist suggested testing him for Celiac Disease. We had never heard of this illness, however Jake's tests came back positive. Since Celiac is hereditary, both of us (his parents), were checked as well. Dad's (Derk) test was positive.

Then the fun began—spending hours in the grocery store reading every label only to leave with very little food and a lot of frustration. We also experienced the learning curve in creating our own gluten free concoctions. We became experienced at surfing the net for gluten free food only to realize that we had to buy the whole case of something we had never tried before and weren't sure if we would even like it. I am sure many of you can related to our predicament.

This is when "Jake's Gluten Free Store" came into being. We opened our doors on February 13, 2006. No more reading labels! Everything in the store or online is gluten free. We've found the best gluten free products available and are always adding to our inventory. We have met some of the greatest people! It has been wonderful to be able to share our stories and experiences with each other.

Well, the celiac saga for our family didn't stop with Jake and Derk. Jake has an identical twin brother, Jace. He began to have migraines, mood swings, and difficulty concentrating. His weight was dropping and then he was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Jace was finally diagnosed with Celiac Disease a year after Jake. They all three now live a healthy, happy gluten free life.
